Homework |
Homework will be minimal. Family time and unstructured play are very important. Participation in sports and clubs helps students stay healthy while developing their social skills, confidence and responsibility.
I will encourage your child to read outside of school. It is very important for students to practice reading for 15 minutes (Grade 4) and 20 minutes (Grade 5 and 6) every evening. This could be reading a book together with a parent or sibling, reading individually or with Raz-Kids online. Daily reading is considered homework.
Reading outside of the school day will improve your child's reading comprehension, fluency and word attack skills. Students may read their library books, children's magazines, non-fiction books, comic books, menus, Raz-Kids interactive books or favourite books from home.
Students can practice their numeracy skills with games online. Students have been provided with a password and username for Prodigy. Every students has a Google email and password that has been given to them by the Ottawa Catholic School Board. Students will use this email and password to login to their Google account where they can access the Student Portal, their Google Drive and Gmail.
To login to your students Google account:
1. Go to www.google.ca
2. Click on the blue SIGN IN button in the right-hand corner
3. Type in your school email address: [email protected]
4. Type in your password. If you don't know your password, please come see me.
You can then access your Gmail, Google Drive and the Student Portal. The OCSB Student Portal will connect you to online math games and programs.
I will be posting information and optional practice questions related to the units and lessons we are doing in class on the 'Numeracy' page. Practice questions will not be taken up at school. However, if your child had difficulty with a question and would like to talk about it with me, they are always welcome! Prior to a math quiz, I may send home some extra practice work.
The only homework your child is required to hand in to me is a weekly writing task. Students will receive their task each Monday (beginning Monday September 16th), we will review the task together as a class. Students have Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to complete the task and bring it back to school on Thursday. If students are finished before Thursday, they are more than welcome to submit it early. This homework will travel to and from school in a black duotang where we will keep your child's homework task each week.
When appropriate, class work that is not completed during the day at school will also be sent home for homework.
